BOOMERS…WELCOME TO SENIORVILLE!
By hattie
You over 50s may have been comfortably settled in with being called “Boomers”. That was a fine title for individuals who still experienced themselves as youthful and rife with potential. But, starting this year they will be referred to by the much-less appealing term, “Senior.” True, that new category has some upsides…like discounts, and Medicare and Social Security checks…BUT, regretably, it is associated with a slew of negative connotations.
As a woman in her 70’s I want to encourage you to hold onto a positive sense of yourself through this time of transition. After all, times have certainly changed, and I assure you that it’s within your h power to transform your personal aging, and become the victor over Time and not its victim.
Does it take work and dedication? Yes it does!
It is worth it? You better believe it!
As my Hattietude declares:
“Your first youth is a gift from Nature…
Your lifelong youth is a gift from yourself”
IS CLINTON USING HOLISTIC MEDICINE?
By hattie
The news media keeps assuring us that Clinton is “fine”. If he is actually fine, why did one of his bypass arteries clog up again? You can’t blame it on his past eating habits, as they say he’s cleaned up his diet. As a decades-long health food “fanatic” I can’t help but wonder if he is being guided to take supplements like COQ10, red rice, Vit.C, E.B,D for instance. There are many qualified holistic physicians that have undoubtedly discovered radically effective solutions to heart problems. I hope that he seeks them out and begins benefitting from unconventional medicine. The world needs him….and, I believe, he needs to expand his health horizons. The Rockefellers did. As a family, they sought out, and used Homeopath physicians. Clintons…follow suite!
LOW FAT, LOW SUGAR = LOW NUTRITIONAL VALUE
By hattie
We are increasingly being warned to avoid fats and sugars. They have both been implicated in heart attacks, cancer and obesity. But it is it really the sugar and the fat that are dangerous? I think not! The quesytion is not whether or not these two ingredients are present in foods…the question is what is the source of them AND how are they used in preparation. For instance, if a food is high in coconut oil AND IS NOT FRIED, not only is this food not bad for you…it’s GOOD FOR YOU! And what about fresh fruit and fresh fruit juices? Of course they’re high in sugar, but the sweetness is NATURAL…and therefor good for you.
So be careful to avoid the hype and READ LABELS!!! When you look at the ingredients of these so-called healthy low-fat and low-sugar foods, you’ll see that the stuff they add as substitutes for what they’ve taken out, is actually more unhealthy than the fat and the sugar. (except, of course, for diabetics)
Stay as close to the natural product as possible, and buy Organic whenever possible, and not only will you be healthier…you’ll enjoy your food more.
I often say, “It aint the calories…it’s the contents!”
Dedicate yourself to pure, whole foods, not nutritional hype.
HUMAN GROWTH HORMONE…YES OR NO?
By hattie
There has been a great deal of negative press about Human Growth Hormone. Athletes and performers who choose to receive it as shots or intravenously become suspects of doping crimes. Let’s clear the air about these distortions.
Charlie Chaplin, Gloria Swanson, Winston Churchill. George Bernard Shaw all periodically travelled to Switzerland for their HgH doses. They had the money (it cost about $1000 per visit — a fortune in those days) the scientific verification, and the passionate desire to remain youthful and vital into their advancd years. I persoally have taken homeopathic HgH from the Dreamous Corporation for over 10 years. Our pharmaceutical industry pumps fortunes into drugs that treat illness, often with frightening side effects. I ponder why that money isn’t being spent on radical technologies and substances that enhance the body’s capacity for regeneration? Stem cells. HgH. Ozone/peroxide therapy, Platelet Rich Plasma (PrP) all fit this category. Our own bodies can heal us with the proper scientifically proven antidotes to degeneration and illness. So what’s my answer? Yes to Human Growth Hormone…which, by the way is FDA approved for patient use though not readily available. Find a forward-thinking holisitic doctor and go for it! Lifelong youthfulness can be yours if you are really determined …and I’m certainly determined!
AMERICAN IDOLS?
By hattie
The headline in today’s Daily News read,” Autopsy: Jacko had gone wiggy & wore guyliner”
The article went on to describe the numerous ways that Michael had altered his looks in addition to surgery. He had a false hair wig woven into his sparse locks, black tatooed eye liner and pink lip liner to define his mouth. Additionally the autopsy showed 13 puncture wounds on his neck, and both arms and ankles! Is this what a performer has to do to satisfy celebrity thirsty audiences?
Now, I admire Lady GaGa and Beyonce for their sheer luck in getting out there and struttin’ their stuff. But at what price? Their costumes, hair and make-up cost millions, and the stress of pumping themselves up to satisfy screaming audiences has to take a huge toll on these young women. When I read and see what it takes to create an idol in America, it gives me cause for alarm. The function of Art is to connect us to the true beauty of Life…what we’re being fed is a disconnection from Life. Dangerous!.
And consider that all this is happening in the context of suffering, maimed, dying victims in Haiti. If the tragedy in Haiti is a wake-up call to humanity, I say it’s time we woke up. This Planet is getting smaller and smaller, and we must face the fact that we are all part of the Earth family and use the millions squandered on publicity to help those in need.
Vitamin D3 or SUNLIGHT IN A CAPSULE?
By hattie
Somewhere beneath the dreary gray sky, the sun is shining, but here in the thick of winter, you’d never know it. Our bodies and our spirits yearn for the warming glow of our precious sun, and, though we await the arrival of spring, it seems an eternity away. Lately, the medical profession has documented an increasing number of cases of Vitamin D3 deficiency. Personally, I get a lot of sun, yet a recent blood test showed that I was lacking in this Vitamin. Of course, I loaded up on it to save my bones, but that did nothing to stave off my desire for the warmth of actual sunlight. There’s so much more to health than vitamins, and what we miss in food and sunlight can’t be duplicated with pills. So I patiently, actually not so patiently, await the days ahead that will allow my hungry skin to feel the warmth of the sun again. Until then, it’s substitute sunlight in a pill, whether I like it or not!
WHY ARE FACELIFTS LIKE POTATO CHIPS?
By hattie
I’m an older woman who loves beauty and glamour, but despite this, I’ve made the decision never to have cosmetic surgery to look either better or younger. In fact, I happen to be appalled at the decision that younger and younger women are making to surgically alter their faces…and other parts of their anatomy too. Now, you may be asking “What is that potato chip title all about?” That question is my way of saying that what’s said of potato chips can also be said of face lifts…”YOU CAN’T HAVE JUST ONE!” Once you cut the nerves and the muscles and disrupt the energy meridiens of the body, you’re asking for trouble in the future. After a few years, the face and body that have been surgically traumatized (and it IS a trauma) will fall and wrinkle again…and possibly even more quickly. This starts a surgery cycle that’s almost impossible to break because unless the woman has found a way to appreciate her beauty at every age, she’ll be faced with discontent and self-loathing. SURGERY CAN’T MAKE YOU BEAUTIFUL…BEAUTY RADIATES FROM WITHIN! It takes time and courage and focus to create personal beauty in body, mind and spirit. No scalpel can achieve that….only YOU CAN!
WRINKLES? DON’T PANIC!
By hattie
I don’t know when fear of aging begins for most people. In my case it began when I was only four years old! Really. My mother, a Russian immigrant would drag me to the Brighton Beach Steam Baths in Brooklyn where I’d be sweltering and sobbing in a room of fat, sweaty naked ladies. The sight of them hovering above me was enough to terrify me into believing that becoming a grown up woman was about the most disgusting thing that could happen to anyone.
I vowed then and there that this would never happen to me.
With this repulsion branded into my being at such a young age, you can imagine how panicky I became when years later I spotted the first wrinkles emerging around my eyes. Since I knew that plastic surgery would never be an option for me, I gave myself the task of not only learninh to accept aging, but actually to embrace it. The result? Sure, I have lines on my face. Time does that. But when I mastered respecting and even enjoying the changes that aging engendered, I became more beautiful, wrinkles and all!
Resistance and defensiveness and denial are what makes faces, and everything else, ugly. Truth and love and openness of spirit create beauty…at every age.

AGING…A FRIGHTENING PROSPECT?
By hattie
I don’t know about you, but I’ve spent most of my young adult years being afraid that aging would turn me into a repulsive hag! Pretty strong language, wouldn’t you say? Sometimes fear motivates us into taking actions that we ordinarily shy away from. In my case, the fear and repulsion I experienced forced me to take rapid and radical action to stop what I believed was an inevitable decline. After 20 or so years of battling aging, the good news is that I was able to transform my personal aging process from dreadful to delicious!!!! YES!!! So here I am in my 70’s, more fit and fabulous than I ever dreamed possible. So maybe the fear wasn’t so bad after all.
